“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Dr. Seuss

Right now there’s a lot of panic and fear in the world, right? Are you feeling it? I’ve seen crazy posts of empty shelves for food staples, water, toilet paper, and sanitizing products. Lines have been reported to wrap around Costco and other retailers. It’s amazing what gets stirred up when fear takes hold isn’t it?

I’ve heard of people insisting they go to the front of the line when others have been waiting a longer time. I wonder what’s going through everyone’s mind. I know that in many cases these aren’t normal behaviors but in times of uncertainty fear can stimulate unusual behavior. Self preservation prevails. My intention this week isn’t to dwell on the fear, however. I would rather focus on being kind.

Why? I’m reminded of something Zig Ziglar, a well known salesman, motivational speaker, and author has said, “ Life is an echo. What you send out, comes back. What you sow, you reap. What you give, you get. What you see in others, exists in you.” So true. In the metaphysical community we talk about being mirrors for one another – what we see in someone is a reflection of ourselves. Similar, yes?

I totally agree that making sure we and our families are safe and cared for is critical but I also feel it’s time to take some deep breaths and imagine releasing the fear that is so heavily embedded in the collective consciousness right now. It’s ok to feel afraid of the unknown but remember you can feel it but not dwell in the fear. I don’t like to feel out of control myself! Taking some precautions makes sense!

When you feel overwhelmed by fear and/or anxious take a few moments to find your center. Yes, it’s doable! Close your eyes and bring your awareness into your heart space. Imagine your heart space opening as you breathe in all that’s loving and release the anxiety, tension and stress on your out breath. Continue to breathe like this until you feel yourself settling and becoming more calm. Deep breathing is one of the easiest and quickest ways to feel calmer.

Once you are calmer what if you asked, “Who can I reach out to and offer to help?” It could be a family member, someone in your community, or a neighbor. If you live alone think about someone you can reach out to periodically and agree to check in with one another if you need supplies or other help. Maybe a neighbor can help. Perhaps there is someone that you know that doesn’t have the supplies on hand that you do. Are you willing to share?

It’s amazing what we can control when we step out of fear, isn’t it? Princess Diana said, “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” In this challenging time please remember that you’re not alone even if you must self quarantine at some point.
