“Love is the name for our pursuit of wholeness, for our desire to be complete.”
~ Plato, Athenian Philosopher
Have you ever thought that you weren’t “complete” and that something was missing? Have you found yourself always looking for something outside of you to fulfill what you thought was missing? I’ve heard so many people say, “If only I could find a wonderful relationship or if only I lived somewhere else or if only I could find my perfect job then I would feel complete.” The common thread is that there is a belief that looking outside of oneself is how you feel complete or whole. I believe as Plato so simply stated that our search for wholeness is Love! Our essence is love and the journey to rediscover it is within us. That’s who we are. When I think about it aren’t we afraid to lose love or want to feel loved or feel like we don’t deserve it? “We are already love so how can it be lost?” I ask. This is part of our journey isn’t it? To remember.
We are already whole and complete unless we believe we aren’t. I understand there are also parts of us that we have rejected through the years and it’s important to reclaim, accept, love, and integrate them back within us. I’ve been experiencing this myself recently. It feels good when it happens. For me, it’s been happening during my lucid dreaming where it seems like a life review happens and then I feel the emotion and reclaim and welcome the part(s) of me that I’ve rejected for many years. I love how Deepak Chopra, Author, alternative medicine advocate explains that, “Healing is the return of the memory of wholeness. Healing, health, whole and holy all mean inclusiveness. Body, mind, spirit, environment, relationships, social interactions are all one wholeness and you’re a part of that one wholeness.” We are not separate from wholeness rather, we are a part of it. It’s time to remember.
Does “feeling whole” or “remembering” happen overnight? For some it’s possible! For others it may require letting go of old habits, beliefs and fears! Yes, fears. Think about it. Right now people know who you are as you continue to search for something outside of you in order to “feel complete”. Ask yourself, “How will my family, friends and loved ones respond to me if they know that I’m no longer searching for something that even I can’t always describe? What if I feel “complete and whole” just as I am?” Sometimes it is this fear of the unknown that keeps us from changing or moving forward and it’s not always conscious. This is where the inner work with your soul comes in. I think of it as going to my inner monastery. This is where my thoughts are quiet and the answers I seek become clear. It’s where I find inner peace and feel loved unconditionally.
You’ve heard me say this pretty often, “Peace begins within.” That is where the most magical and extraordinary personal awareness, healing, and growth happens. Rumi, Persian poet, Islamic scholar, theologian, and Sufi mystic reminds us that, “The universe is not outside of you. Look inside yourself; everything that you want, you already are.” You are whole and complete! Are you ready to accept and feel it?
