“The adventure of life is to learn. The purpose of life is to grow. The nature of life is to change.” William Arthur Ward, Writer

I don’t know about you but there are moments where I feel overwhelmed and I ask, “What in the heck is going on in the world? Why am I here? How can I make a difference when so much seems broken?” When I feel like this I know it’s time to take some deep cleansing breaths and move my awareness into my heart space and once again feel inner peace, love, and my connection to God/Goddess/All That Is, Source. In this space the spark of hope emerges and once again I realize I’m not alone.

As I reflect on the quote by William Arthur Ward I remember that life is an adventure and I’ve always thought of it as an evolving journey that’s dynamic and not static. For me, it’s like a spiral. There’s no beginning or ending only ever deepening levels of understanding with abundant opportunities for personal growth and change. I know that change must first occur within me before anything in my outer world changes. I also realize that I don’t have to travel alone. So, it was timely to watch a new music video by Tim McGraw, Singer, actor, and record producer called “Here On Earth”. I felt uplifted and inspired after watching it. I loved the words and the refrain resonated as Tim McGraw sang, “It’s like we open our eyes for the very first time when we found out why we’re here on Earth.”

I often meet clients who feel confused, sometimes alone, and at a turning point. They ask, “Why am I here?” Over 20 years ago, I asked the same question while I was completing a Spiritual Direction part of my Theology program. An answer came to me during meditation one afternoon. As I asked the question, “Why am I here?” I heard, “To help people remember.” What? In that moment I had no clue what it meant and over the years I’ve learned that I help people remember that our essence is LOVE and we are both human and divine – here to express our divine nature as human beings. How we express our divine nature varies. I’ve had many helpers along the way and my life adventure continues to evolve. We’re in this together.

Although I heard, “Help people remember” that doesn’t mean that’s everyone’s purpose. Some people believe that we’re here to be happy or to experience a full range of emotions to help consciousness expand. People who joyfully shared their purpose on Tim McGraw’s music video shared, “I’m here to: help heal the planet, be the best I can be, help others, teach by example, make people laugh, express through my art, or bring people together through music.” Wow! Albert Schweitzer, Nobel Peace Prize recipient, theologian, writer, physician, and humanitarian said, “The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.” Clearly, helping others has been expressed by so many.

A common theme emerged – we’re not alone and we’re in this together. We’re here to help others in ways that make us feel good and happy. The Dalai Lama says, “Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.” What do you believe? There are so many ways to help. Please stay hopeful and remember that we’re in this together!
