“Life is available only in the present. That is why we should walk in such a way that every step can bring us to the here and now.” Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Buddhist monk

How many times have you heard, “Be in the present moment or only NOW is real?” I’ve been reflecting on why it’s important to BE in the moment recently. Why, when so much of our lived experience is about planning for the future and, to some degree, the focus on the future is so intense that we lose sight of what’s in front of us in our daily lives? We don’t fully appreciate what’s right before us until life throws a curveball and the unexpected surprise confronts us! I’m sure that many of you have stories to tell about your own experiences.

These surprises can show up in many ways, can’t they? For example there might be an unexpected pandemic, illness, loss of a loved one, loss of job, relocation, or a financial windfall. The list is limitless, isn’t it? How we respond to these unexpected surprises creates our experience. We are responding in the NOW moment not the past or future. Although many people may ‘dwell’ on lived experiences from the past the only sure thing, so to speak, is what we choose to do in the present moment. Marcel Proust, French novelist, critic, and essayist reminds us, “Do not wait for life. Do not long for it. Be aware, always and at every moment, the the miracle is in the here and now.”

I’ve learned how precious and short life is and I know that many of you have as well. What experiences and relationships do you want to flourish? Why not let your loved ones know how you feel right now? How about really engaging and listening to someone who is going through a challenging time? How well do you listen to and ‘hear’ your children? How often do you create time for yourself so that you are centered and feel calm within? Why not begin NOW? Your life is yours to create! You can change your choices anytime, can’t you? Are you ready to let go of the stories, trauma, and wounds from the past so that you can enjoy a richer life NOW? The past is part of who you are and who you are now can choose to be different if you want and are willing to change! WooHoo!!

My life and journey have taken many unexpected turns and twists and today I’m grateful. I find that I’m more open and willing to change and not worry about the unexpected surprises. I have no control over them. My response to them is what I can control. I’m grateful to be here right now with people that I care about and love. My life is mine to create and I’m willing to live it to the fullest. I’m reminded of a quote from Eckhart Tolle, Spiritual teacher and author who has said, “The only thing that is ultimately real about your journey is the step that you are taking at this moment. That’s all there ever is.” How true! What steps are you taking?
